I HAVE received your despatch No. 135 of the 21st April last, inclosing a copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton, on the subject of the removal of obstructions in the Canton River.

I approve the representations which Mr. Campbell made to the Viceroy of the two Kwang on the subject, and I request that you will instruct him to continue to keep the matter before the notice of the Chinese authorities and to furnish reports from time to time on the progress made in the work of removal.
